Keiwone Malone is a local
product out of Mitchell High. The 4* Wide Receiver
originally signed with Alabama but transferred to Memphis
after redshirting his one year at Alabama.
Last season he was third on the team in receptions and
second in yards per catch. Malone led the American
Athletic Conference in returns last year and picked up some
preseason mentions. Athlon Sports' had him on the All
AAC 3rd team and Phil Steele had him on the All AAC 4th
His production slipped a little last year compared to 2012
but we wouldn't put that on him. The Tigers had a new
quarterback and a less experienced offensive line than they
did in 2012.
The last four games of the season last year Malone caught 16
passes for 232 yards.
Malone, just like fellow receiver Joe Craig, has
speed. He has the ability to streak the defense.
Give him a little space and he can make a short 5 yard catch
into a 15 yard gain.
Punt return is where he has shinned the most. He has a
knack for it, he's elusive, and has good vision.
WHY HE COULD BE HIGHER:
Malone is a great talent and he's shown
flashes of that the past two years.
WHY HE COULD BE LOWER:
While he's incredibly talented, he
hasn't lived up to that talent thus far. Not entirely his
fault. He needs to get the ball into his hands and
that requires the quarterback to throw it to him. In
order for the quarterback to get him the ball he needs
more than the 1.5 seconds of time to find the
Malone had a great spring
practice. He looked sharp and more focused than
we've ever seen him. This season he not only
physically ready but mentally as well. Paxton Lynch
has a year under his belt, the offensive line is stronger,
which means there should be enough there for Malone to
finally shine at Wide Receiver, he's already shined at
Punt Returning. His last year in a Tigers jersey
should be a memorial one. Opposing punters would be
wise not to punt it to him.
