Mens Basketball Leads Way with Perfect APR

Four (4) University of Memphis athletics teams were honored by the NCAA for posting Academic Progress Rates (APR) among the top 10 percent of their respective sports in the nation. Those four programs were baseball, men's basketball, women's golf and women's tennis.
On Wednesday, June 19, the NCAA released the APRs for all of Memphis' 19 sports teams, and the news continues to be positive as all 19 programs had APRs of 930 or higher and will receive no penalties. Institutions that fall under a multi-year threshold of 930 or a single-year mark of 900 will be subject to penalties. The current APR is based on the multi-year period from 2007-08 through 2010-11.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Every student-athlete can earn up to two points each term - one for eligibility and one for returning to school. If a student-athlete maintains eligibility for the next semester and returns, the team he or she plays for gets two points. If a student-athlete is eligible but leaves school, the institution gets one point. If a student-athlete loses eligibility and also leaves school, the institution earns no points. Every student-athlete's score is added up and divided by the maximum number of points attainable to come up with a team total and APR.
