OL Commits

The Memphis staff is working on hitting the areas of need this recruiting season. One of those areas was closer to being complete with the newest commit.
Whitehaven Offensive Linemen Hubert Mays, known as Tony, became the latest commitment to Coach Fuente and the Memphis Tigers.

Mays, 6-foot-5 260 lbs, was on his official visit this weekend and said it was the coaching staff's enthusiasm as one of the deciding factors for his commitment. Other schools that were in the running were MTSU, So. Miss. and Arkansas State.
During the visit he was hosted by former Whitehaven teammate Terry Redden.
"We went downtown and had a great time. I loved BB Kings. Since I'm from Memphis going out seeing the city wasn't important to me. I was interested in talking to the coaches and players to get a feel for how the program is going," Mays said.
Mays said he built a good relationship with Coach Scott, "Coach Scott always kept in touch with me even after I injured my ankle during the season. He continued to let me know I had a place to play. He kept me informed during and after the coaching change."
There were plenty of schools interested in Mays before the injury but Memphis and MTSU continued to show interest and keep in touch with Mays during that time.
Mays said he felt comfortable with the players and coaches during his visit and he sees Memphis as an opportunity to come in and get some early playing time.
"With the new coaching staff coming in there's no position that's guaranteed. Everyone is on an even playing field. Playing in college is a different level than playing in high school. If I come in and work hard I have a chance to contribute to this team and help get the Tigers to were we all want to be. We all want to win."
Whitehaven Head Coach Rodney Saulsberry said, "I think Tony is the steal of this year's class. He has great upside, ideal frame and is NFL potential with the right development."
Mays is the 4th offensive linemen to commit for the 2012 class and is the first Whitehaven Offensive Linemen in about 20 years that will sign with a Division 1 school.
