Tigers Fall 5-0 to Georgia Southern

Memphis was shut out for the first time since 2014 as Georgia Southern won 5-0 and took the series over the Tigers Saturday night at J.I. Clements Stadium. The series finale is Sunday at noon (CT).

Georgia Southern got the scoring started with two runs in the second inning and never looked back. A leadoff walk opened the inning and a double lined off of Connor Alexander put two runners in scoring position with no outs. The Eagles were able to take the lead on an RBI groundout to second base.

A single to right field made the score 2-0 with just one out in the inning. Catcher Damo DeMatteo helped the Tigers get out of the inning by throwing out a runner trying to swipe second base.

The Eagles added to their lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 5-0. A leadoff single and a hit batter put two runners on base. The first two runs came home after a pair of two-out singles. A wild pitch brought home the third run.

Memphis was without a hit through the first six innings and had seven strikeouts. The Tigers had just one base runner over that stretch, on a walk by third baseman Zach Schritenthal in the fourth.

Schritenthal broke up Chase Cohen’s no-hitter with a single to left field to lead off the seventh inning. The Tigers were able to get two runners into scoring position but couldn’t get a run home to break up the shutout. Schritenthal got on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Alexander allowed five runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings on the mound. Colton Neel pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
