Memphis head coach Daron Schoenrock announced back in January that he was retiring after the baseball season. The University has had months to find someone who is the right fit to take over this team. Have they found their man?
Sources have told TigerSportsReport that Kerrick Jackson will be hired as the next baseball head coach. Jackson is currently the president of the MLB Draft League. The Draft League is a collegiate summer baseball league that showcases top draft-eligible prospects leading up to each summer MLB's Draft.
Before that, Jackson was the head coach at Southern.
He took a Southern Jaguars team from 9 wins in his first year to 32 win team that won the 2019 SWAC Baseball Tournament championship and a appearance in the 2019 NCAA Regional. He was named the SWAC Coach of the Year in 2019 as well.
He spent his time as an assistant with stops at Fairfield, Emporia State, Coffeyville CC, Jefferson College, Nicholls State, St. Louis CC, and Missouri.
He was the recruiting coordinator while he was at Missouri. He's been a Pro Scout with the Nationals and was a sports agent with the Boras Corporation.
That range of experience gives him a unique perspective that will benefit Memphis. He was named as one of the 50 Names to watch for this season coaching watch list by Baseball America.
Here's what they had to say about him, "Jackson has the most wide-ranging resume of anyone on this list."
Memphis is in a talent rich area for baseball and having a head coach with the range of experience that Jackson has would be a major boost to the Tigers program.
Can he turn the Tigers around as fast as he did the Southern Jaguars? He has the experience to do so.
