In a surprising announcement Women's Basketball Coach Mellissa McFerrin has announced her retirement effective immediately. Coach McFerrin was in her 13th season at Memphis and had a 193-199 record. The Tigers were currently 4-10 on the season. The pinnacle of Coach McFerrin's Memphis stint were the 2010-2013 seasons when the Tiger's made 4 straight post-season tournament appearances.
Coach McFerrin issued a statement in which she indicated that “In arriving at the decision to retire, this time, personal reasons have won out over professional ones. It is time for a new season in my life.”
Associate head coach Michelle Savage has been tapped to lead the Lady Tigers for the remainder of the season as Interim Head Coach. As has been noted on several editions of Tiger's Tonight and on Tiger's Today, the AD has put an emphasis on improving facilities and the competitiveness in the Olympic sport programs. The Women's Basketball team could be the first of many moves to come in these programs as Laird Veetch continues to put his stamp on the Memphis Athletic Department. Best wishes to Coach McFerrin in her retirement.
