Memphis faced off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in their second preseason game before the season starts on November 4. In a game with 96 attempted free throws, and an agreement that no player would foul out, we learned more about this Tigers team.
Here are three major things that popped out to me.
The Tigers Have their go-to scorer: While he had an impressive showing in the UNC game, PJ Haggerty displayed an ability to will himself to the free throw line and finish around the rim. He ended the game with 32-points and shot 14-18 from the line. Haggerty also grabbed 9 rebounds, the same he had in the first preseason game.
The Tigers Have Effort: Even though the Crimson Tide finished with 96-points, the Tigers did not look like they were taking many defensive possessions off. Arms were up in passing lanes, and the paint was not easy to score in. Memphis tallied up 14-steals and allowed 30-points in the paint compared to the 54 they scored. As long as there is will to play defense, the stops will come. The more the team plays together and becomes familiar with the system, the more they will create turnovers, because they pass the eye test.
Shooting Woes: Despite scoring 88-points, the Tigers shot just 29-73 and 1-14 from the perimeter. They also shot a discouraging 29-48 from the foul line. Missing 19 free throws in a game you lose by 8 is haunting, whether it is counted on record books or not. Memphis shot 17-28 in the UNC showdown, so that marks two games with a struggle from the charity stripe.
Of course this is all subject to change in the regular season, but I like what I see out of this Tigers team. The good outweighs the bad, and the bad is all fixable.
Memphis finished with 15-turnovers, but the Tigers really looked like they were testing themselves with the pace tonight, creating silly, sloppy, turnovers. This number was down from 22 in the St.Jude classic.
The Tigers have 7-days before their season tips-off versus the visiting Missouri Tigers on November 4.
